The society promotes scientific research into the causes of DNA damage and repair and the relevance of these to disease. Alexander Hollaender, Joshua Lederberg, James Crow, Ernst Freese, James Neel, William Russell, Heinrich Malling, Frederick J. de Serres, Matthew Meselson, and others.
